The Reception curriculum
Our curriculum
The curriculum we follow in Reception is made up of six areas of learning and development. These six areas make up the skills, knowledge and experiences appropriate for our children to grow, learn and develop.
1. Personal, social and emotional development – this covers dispositions and attitudes, self confidence and self esteem, relationships, behaviour and self control, self care and community.
2. Communication, language and literacy – this covers language for speaking, thinking and listening, sounds and letters, reading and writing.
3. Mathematical development – this covers numbers, calculating and shape, space and measures.
4. Knowledge and understanding of the world – this covers exploration and investigation, designing and making, ICT, time, place and communities.
5. Physical development – this covers movement and space, health and body awareness and using small equipment.
6. Creative development – this covers being creative! i.e. responding to experiences, expressing ideas and exploring media through art, design, music and imaginative play.
Children in the Reception class are given a variety of opportunities and experiences to practise their skills and further their learning in each area of development. This is achieved in a number of ways, such as focused teaching, structured play and free-flow play. This gives our children a variety of situations in which to learn, practise and refine their skills and understanding. Learning is approached through ‘umbrella topics’ such as Ourselves, Homes or Animals. This encourages children to see links between each area of development, which is very important at this age. However, if something ’unplanned’ should occur – such as snow or an interesting visitor . . . who knows where our learning will take us!
If you have any further questions regarding our curriculum, please come and have a chat with us. You could also have a look at the postings in the categories section on the Reception site, as these are sorted into examples of learning in each area of development.
